RHIP

RHIP=Rank Has It's Privileges. It seems to be applied only arbitrarily.

I briefly mentioned this in one of my prior blog posts. It often seems that is has fallen by the wayside. What I was referring to in my prior blog was housing at our current base. You have airman barely out of A school living in houses far nicer houses than chiefs and officers who have been in 10-15+ years.

ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL, BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS.
-George Orwell, Animal Farm

That statement is no more true anywhere else than it is in the Navy. They claim to have a zero tolerance policy for things like alcohol related incidents. If that were true, then we'd have uniform punishments applied across the board. Instead, 2, 3, 4 people are allowed to get away with it with a slap on the wrist and then when the 5th person does it, all of a sudden we have a problem and need to make an example of someone to send a message.

It's even hitting the mainstream media now.

Navy Probes Raunchy Videos Aboard USS Enterprise

From the article:
A senior Navy official told NBC News that top officers became aware of the videos years ago and told Honors and others at the time to "knock it off."

Yeah that's the way to address things. Hey you're stealing supplies, knock it off. Hey you're late for work every day, knock it off. Hey you're showing up to work drunk, knock it off. Hey you let your quals lapse, knock it off.

If it's wrong when it happens, it's wrong. It doesn't matter if it's made public knowledge at the time or not. It sends the type of message that you only get in trouble if you get caught; or it's only wrong if someone else doesn't like it. Yep, that's an EXCELLENT attitude to drive home to our junior sailors.

Would I have enjoyed the videos? Most likely, but I'm a bit on the un-PC side myself...lol. Unfortunately, the world we live in today has become so skewed and candy coated that we have to mind our Ps and Qs to the nth degree(which I think is a crock of shit, both in the Navy and in society as a whole). However, I don't think someone got to that level of leadership by being ignorant of the climate of the Navy today-or how those in charge want it perceived at least. If you're going to be in those positions, you need to be above reproach and have your ducks in a row so that no one can throw things at you that can cause a problem like is now being experienced. And in the age of digital cameras, camera phones and youtube, to do otherwise is just silly. Perception IS reality.
