There is some truth to that statement. And if you DO lose it...be prepared to start from scratch in building back up again.
I am a runner, albeit a slow one lol. I've run 16 half marathons, 3 marathons and countless other races. My running in 2010 was almost non-existent though. I kept signing up for half marathons hoping that would motivate me to get back into training mode. It didn't. All that happened was I'd plod my way through a race and hurt like crazy the next day or two.
I registered for the Marine Corps Marathon this year. It's Oct 30. I have 240 days to train and get back on track. I also have several other shorter races(5Ks to half marathons) that I'm registered for between now and then.
I started back on the treadmill at the end of last week. 1 mile. 1 slow(well, they'll always be slow lol), semi painful to the lungs, mile. But in the span of a week, it IS getting slightly easier. The first time I paused ever quarter mile for a quick drink of water(I'm just not coordinated enough to run at normal pace and drink outta my Nalgene bottle-it's be a wet tshirt contest at the gym if I did that). Then every third of a mile. Today, I stopped for about 15 seconds at the half mile mark and that was it. Progress:)
Slow and steady may not actually win the race, but it'll still get me across the finish line!

I recommend an Amphipod Bottle. They are awesome, easy on the hands, and easy to drink from on the run!
This is the one I have (I actually own 2 of them) and LOVE IT!!
